Driving rules & cover scope

Provisional licence — what's covered?

Learner drivers need suitable insurance, a valid provisional licence and the required supervision.

Check that the policy covers you as a learner in the vehicle you will use. A learner practising in their own car needs their own insurance. In someone else's car, the owner's policy must cover the learner or the learner needs a separate suitable policy.

For private practice, the supervisor must meet the age, licence and experience rules. Your insurer may impose additional conditions. See the GOV.UK rules for practising with family or friends.

When you pass your test, tell the insurer and confirm you have cover as a full-licence holder before driving unsupervised. Learner cover may end on passing, and the new premium can differ.
