Driving rules & cover scope

Driving in the Republic of Ireland

Third-party cover is automatic. A green card isn't legally required but it's recommended.

UK-issued motor insurance includes third-party cover in the Republic of Ireland under the green-card system. Since 2021 you don't legally need to carry the physical green card, but it's still best practice — Irish police can ask for proof of cover, and the green card is the universally accepted form.
