Claims & incidents

Should I claim if the damage is small?

It's maths — compare the repair cost against your excess plus the likely renewal hit.

Small bump? Sometimes claiming costs you more than just paying for the repair yourself. Here's how to work it out.

🧮The two things to weigh up

  • Your excess — you pay this regardless of fault. If the repair costs less than your excess, claiming costs you more than just paying out of pocket.
  • Your renewal price — even a small claim is a claim. Insurers typically re-price you up at the next renewal, and the impact lasts a few years before it fades.

📏Rule of thumb

  • Small dent or scrape under your excess → usually cheaper to pay privately
  • Anyone injured, anyone else involved, or significant repair → claim
