What's 'first notification of loss'?

Insurance jargon for the first call you make to start a claim. You don't need to know the term.

You'll see "FNOL" — first notification of loss — mentioned in insurance paperwork. It's just insurer-speak for the first call you make to open a claim. You don't need to know the term.

📋What happens on that first call

  • The handler takes the basics — what, when, where, who
  • You get a claim reference number
  • The claim is officially open from that point
  • The clock starts on time-sensitive things — medical exam if anyone's injured, vehicle inspection, etc.
